Fire pits make summer super fun. You can roast marshmallows over the open flame, make s’mores, or just relax with a glass of wine and your family and friends. It’s important to understand, however, that a fire pit is an open flame. As such, you need to follow safety tips to make sure that the evening remains enjoyable. Luxury Landscape Supply is going to list some fire pit safety tips below, and if you need to repair your fire pit or want to build a new one, we have the supplies to do so.
Check the Wind
Burning your fire pit on a windy night is not a good idea. Make sure to only burn it when there is very little wind blowing through the air. It’s also important to know the direction of the wind before you light the fire pit. If the wind blows the flames close to your home or a tree, you may end up with a disaster.
Light Responsibly
It might be tempting to use propellants to get the fire pit going but this is a very bad idea. Do not use gasoline, lighter fluid, or any other flammable fluid to light your fire pit. Rather, learn how to build a fire the old-fashioned way with proper kindling and dry wood to get it to light quickly and easily.
Dress Responsibly
It’s also important to consider how you are dressed when you are sitting around the fire pit. If you are wearing flammable clothing, such as nylon or polyester, you open yourself up to the chance of setting your clothes on fire, especially if the clothes are loose-fitting.
Maintain Distances
Little ones and pets should be three feet or more from the fire. Even the adults shouldn’t sit too close. This not only puts you at risk of being burned by sparks and flames, but you’ll also end up inhaling the smoke from the fire pit which can leave you feeling sick and uncomfortable.
Avoid Sparks
Choose woods that don’t spark a lot for the inside of your fire pit. Soft woods, such as cedar and pine, pop and generate a ton of sparks. It’s much better to use hard and untreated wood to burn in your fire pit to prevent access popping and sparks.
Be Ready to Extinguish
Finally, be ready to be able to extinguish the fire pit right away if necessary. Keep your garden hose, a fire extinguisher, or a bucket of water close by in the event that you need to use it. Also, make sure that the fire pit is out completely before you go to bed.
