Winter is just around the corner and the weather is already getting cold. If this is your favorite time of year, enjoy it! Before you plan your Thanksgiving dinner and December holidays, take a few steps to protect your lawn so it, too, is ready for the reduction in temperature during the winter months. If your lawn already has patches of dead grass, check out our supply of sod and resod the lawn now. This is just one tip for protecting the lawn. Here are other tips.
Rake the Leaves
If you ignore autumn’s fallen leaves and leave them laying all over your lawn, you run the risk of smothering the lawn and killing it in the winter. Rakes the leaves into a compost pile that you can use to fertilize your lawn. A mulching mower will turn the fallen leaves into nutritious mulch.
Aerate the Lawn
Fall is the perfect time to aerate your lawn. This gives you a chance to use the mulch made from the fallen leaves to fertilize your lawn during the winter. In order to aerate the lawn, get your hands on a core aerator. Aerate the lawn when it is moist, such as after watering it heavily.
Fill the Holes
The aerator is going to leave holes in the lawn, this is the perfect place to add the mulch you’ve created from your fallen leaves. Other things that are good in a mulch pile include, grass clippings, plant trimmings, fruits and vegetables, and sawdust if you are into woodworking.
Seed or Sod the Lawn
Fall is also an excellent time to seed the lawn for spring growth. As we mentioned above, you can also roll out sod to fill in the bare/dead patches. We carry many different types of sod, so we have the perfect sod rolls for your existing lawn. You can find sod that will match.
Mow Frequently
Keep your lawn short during the winter months to avoid critters. Mice, rats, and other yard pests thrive in long grass during the winter to create homes that will keep them warm. Keeping a short lawn gives them nothing with which to work. This will reduce your chances of an infestation.
