Signs My Lawn Is Too Dry

Your lawn needs just the right amount of water to thrive. If you are underwatering your lawn, you could kill it or, at a minimum, damage it. The type of grass you have determines the watering schedule; some sods require less water than others do. If you don’t know the grass type you have, you can inspect your lawn to see if it is doing any of the following things. If it is, it is too dry and needs more watering.

The Blades Are Wilted

Your lawn is dehydrated if the grass blades are wilting. They should stand tall and proud, and they will if they have plenty of water. If your grass blades are curling, they are wilting, and this is a bad sign. Wilted grass blades can also be a sign of disease. Inspect your lawn on a regular basis to make sure the blades are standing up straight instead of curling downward.

The Blades Remain Tamped

Your lawn temporarily tamps down when you walk across it. Things such as the wheels on your lawnmower can also tamp the grass down. This being said, the lawn should bounce back up relatively quickly and look as if you never walked across it. If your lawn is not bouncing back, the blades are too dry, and you need to water the lawn more frequently.

It Isn’t Green

When people describe a healthy and thriving lawn, the color green is associated with it. The reason why is that this is true. If your lawn is getting enough water, it will be green. Dehydrated lawns can turn bluish, gray, purple, or brown. If parts of your lawn are green and other parts are brown, there may be a problem with the sprinklers watering the lawn evenly.

Cracking Soil

Finally, the soil in which the lawn is planted will reflect whether the lawn is dehydrated. If you have seen pictures of a drought, you have seen that the ground is cracked. If your lawn’s soil is cracking, especially along the borders, you’ve got a dry lawn because the ground underneath it is dry. If the lawn is getting enough water, the ground underneath it will be moist.

Perhaps your lawn has been too dry for a long time and it has died or portions of it have died. If this is the case, stop by our shop to pick up the sod you need to replace all or portions of your lawn.
