Six Signs I Am Overwatering My Lawn

Luxury Landscape Supply is here if you need to replace portions of your lawn because you have overwatered them to death. We have different types of sod so there has to be a type that will match your existing lawn. In the interim, we are going to list the signs below that you are overwatering your lawn. Pay close attention to your lawn’s health to make sure it isn’t getting too much water.

1. Water Runoff

You should never see water runoff when you are watering your lawn. Water runoff is a stream of water flowing out of the lawn and onto other portions of your property. If you see the water running off, your lawn has plenty of water already. In fact, the lawn may have too much water.

2. Sponginess

Another sign that your lawn has too much water is if it feels spongy underneath your foot. It should never feel squishy. If it does, you are overwatering the lawn and you need to reduce the amount of time that you spend watering it. This could include decreasing the number of days each week.

3. Lawn Fungus

Your lawn also has too much water if it is starting to grow fungus. The same is true if you are overwatering your plants and the soil starts to grow fungus. You may see the fungus on the lawn blades themselves, or you may end up with mushrooms growing in your yard.

4. Weeds

In some cases, the excess water can kill your lawn but encourage weed growth. Some weeds thrive on excess water. If your lawn has too many weeds, you are overwatering it. Reduce the watering schedule to see if this helps to inhibit the weed growth.

5. Bugs

Another thing that loves excess water is certain species of bugs. For example, your lawn may start to become home to water bugs among other critters. In fact, the next sign that you are overwatering your lawn gives the bugs plenty of places to hide, which is why the population increases.

6. Excess Thatch

Finally, if you notice that your lawn has excess thatch or decomposed plants on it, you are overwatering it. The excess water prohibits natural organisms from breaking down the thatch so it can become fertilizer. Excess that indicates that there is too much water on the lawn.
