The Steps for Laying Sod

Luxury Landscape Supply advises that the first step for laying sod is to measure your yard so you know how much sod to buy. We have a large selection of sod, so you can find the perfect sod for your front or back yard. After you have measured the yard, you’re ready to purchase the sod and pick it up. Follow the steps below to lay the sod for a lush and beautiful lawn.

Prepare Your Soil

You’ll need to prepare the soil before you lay the sod. Clear the area so that the only thing left is dirt. Make sure to remove all of the rocks and rake the ground so that you have soil that is at least 6 inches in depth. Test the soil to make sure its pH level and mineral content are ideal for sod growth. If necessary, fertilize the soil if the pH level is off and it is in need of nutrients. Make sure the ground level is smooth.

Lay the Sod

Went down the soil before you start to lay the sod. Unroll the first row of sod by following the edge in your yard. A good way to ensure that the sod is even is to unroll the first row along the patio, a walkway, or the driveway. Rake the soil as you unroll the sod to make sure there are no bumps. Smooth out the first row of sod and repeat with the rest of the rows of sod. Water the sod as you go along.

Check for Gaps

Make sure you purchase a little extra sod to fill in any gaps that may form when you lay down the rows of sod. Check for the gaps and then use a utility knife to cut into the extra sod. Cut pieces that will fit into the gap so you can patch the gap. Make sure you also cut around your sprinkler heads so they can raise accordingly when it’s time to water the lawn. Fill in all of the gaps and water the extra pieces.

Press the Sod

Once the sod has been laid and all of the patches filled, it’s important to press down the sod to remove air pockets. There is a roller that is designed to do this. This roller will make your life much easier. You want to roll the sod in a grid pattern. In other words, roll the sod vertically and then roll it horizontally. Make sure all of the air pockets have been removed so the sod can take root quickly and easily.

Maintain the Sod

Your new sod must be water right away to make sure it takes root. Water the sod every day for a week. Water the sod in the morning. Stay off your lawn if you can. If you walk on the freshly laid sod, you can cause it to move or bunch. After the sod takes root, water it twice each week. Allow the sod to grow 3 inches before you mow it for the first time. Use a push mower the first time you mow the sod because it is still fragile. Fertilize the sod once it has been mowed to ensure the soil has plenty of nutrients.
